People in Indonesia's western-most province of Aceh have voted for a new governor, testing the strength of a peace deal signed by separatist fighters and the government in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.
Five candidates, including incumbent Irwandi Yusuf, were on the ballot on Monday.
More than a dozen others ran for district chiefs and mayoral posts in simultaneous elections. Official results will be announced next week.
Aceh is the only region in the nation of 240 million to be ruled by Islamic law, sparking debate ahead of the polls as to how strictly it should be enforced.
But the main electoral issues were peace, stability and ways to ensure continued economic growth in a region devastated by the deadly tsunami, that left 230,000 people dead in a dozen countries - three quarters of them in Aceh alone.
The scale of the destruction prompted the authorities and fighters seeking a separate homeland to enter into a peace deal after years of conflict. The warring sides said they did not want to add to people's suffering.
"I don't care who wins," said Teuku Sayed Azhar, a 32-year-old farmer, who lost his brother and dozens of friends and neighbours in the war that claimed more than 15,000 lives.
Yusuf, a former separatist who won the governorship in 2006, is running as an independent.
His main challenger is Zaini Abdullah, who has the backing of many former members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM - the group that spearheaded the separatist struggle.
Each side has accused the other of intimidation.
"I will accept the result, whoever wins," said Yusuf. "As long as the election is free and fair ... that's how it should be in a democracy."
The election in Aceh, which has a population of more than 4 million, is being closely watched in part because its success in integrating former rebels into the political landscape is seen as a potential model for other countries.

FOR nearly six years, Chadri Sittiaree has been an ardent supporter of Thailand’s former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, who remains a fugitive at home. Around Thailand, where rallies by Mr Thaksin’s “red shirt” admirers take place weekly, Mr Chadri has become a fixture—selling mugs adorned with the faces of Mr Thaksin and his younger sister, the current prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, to offset his own travel costs.
“When the coup started, I felt I was robbed of my rights, because I selected him and they threw him out,” Mr Chadri explained.
In this he is far from alone. An estimated 50,000 of Mr Thaksin’s fans alighted in Siem Reap, in the north of Cambodia, during the weekend’s Thai New Year holiday to catch a glimpse of the one-time premier. Mr Thaksin has been living in a kind of self-imposed exile for years now, to avoid a raft of corruption charges.
His countrymen who made the pilgrimage to neighbouring Cambodia to see him were not disappointed. At a speech he gave to a rally on Saturday, Mr Thaksin thanked his followers for their support. Then he promised he would soon return home.
The announcement was greeted by euphoria among his boisterous fans—some of whom had spent days camped out at a fairgrounds on the outskirts of Siem Reap in hopes of meeting Mr Thaksin. In a tent city set up adjacent to the stage, Thais wearing red T-shirts that bore slogans like “Truth Today” spoke of national reconciliation—and also about the possibility of Mr Thaksin’s imminent return. For the first time in the half-dozen years since Mr Thaksin’s ouster, that appears to be within reach. Many observers in Bangkok believe a newly instated national-reconciliation committee has been paving the way for just such a move. Officials from Pheu Thai spent their weekend in Cambodia hinting that their de facto leader would be home within a year.
It was just such a show of hope that thousands of Thais trickled into Cambodia over the weekend. They came in trucks, private cars and long-distance taxis, but most shot into town on a series of massive buses that were adorned with photos of Mr Thaksin side-by-side with Cambodia’s prime minister, Hun Sen.
As much as the rally was a testament to Mr Thaksin’s popularity, it was perhaps even more a reflection of the unusual friendship that has burgeoned between him and Mr Hun Sen over the past few years. At a cost that the Cambodian government has refused to disclose, thousands of its security officers were deployed along with hundreds of support staff including street sweepers, electrical engineers, health workers and many more besides. Cambodian PM attacked for 'excess generosity'
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has been criticised for being overly generous to red-shirt supporters of former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who is in Cambodia this weekend.
Many Cambodians were upset that their PM allowed red shirts from Thailand to visit Angkor Wat without having to pay the US$20 (S$25) entrance fee. The move could cause Cambodia to lose about Bt30 million in revenue, a source said yesterday. Hun Sen also ordered more than 10 VIP buses to pick up red shirts arriving in Cambodia from the Thai border town of Aranyaprathet. Sa Kaew Immigration deputy superintendent Pol Lt-General Ben-chapol Rodsawat said some 164 buses, vans, pick-ups and cars carried 7,432 red shirts to Cambodia. The arrival of the red shirts caused traffic chaos and criticism among many Cambodians in the border town of Poi Pet, which is opposite Thailand's Sa Kaew. Tong Yii, 46, a Cambodian businessman, said the country normally charges foreign tourists $20 each for the entrance to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, but Hun Sen had allowed the red shirts to enter free of charge from last Friday till today. More than 50,000 Thais are expected to visit Angkor Wat over the three days, which meant Cambodia would lose about Bt30 million in entrance fees. A Cambodian immigration official in the Cambodian city of Poipet, which is across the border from Sa Kaew, said yesterday that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had ordered immigration officials to provide special treatment to the red shirts from Thailand. The red shirts went wild as soon as Thaksin arrived at the hotel City Angkor in Siem Reap, flocking to greet him, pulling his arms, embracing him and having their picture taken with him. Thaksin calmed them down, saying they have time as he would stay there several days. Thailand, Cambodia agree to follow court decision
Speaking on the sidelines of Tuesday’s ASEAN summit meeting, Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul told the Bangkok Post Cambodia and Thailand might not have to withdraw troops from Preah Vihear temple if the bilateral talks went well, eliminating the need for Indonesia to send observers as planned.
Lieutenant-General Chhum Socheat, spokesman for Ministry of Defence, told the Post yesterday that although the two-day meeting in Bangkok, which concluded yesterday, had not yet produced an outcome, its sole purpose was to implement the order to withdraw troops from the 17.3-square kilometre area by July 18.

BANGKOK- Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to assign respective secretaries in their joint working group to work together in ensuring both sides’ compliance with the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the Preah Vihear land dispute.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Thani Thongphakdi disclosed the stance after Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul chaired a meeting of the Thailand team for the Preah Vihear case.
Mr Thani said the meeting reported the outcome of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Working Group meeting held in Thailand on April 3-5. He said the meeting was satisfactory, and both sides agreed to implement ICJ’s decision, which orders temporary withdrawal of both Thai and Cambodian troops from disputed areas around the ancient temple.
The Spokesperson stated that secretaries from both nations will work together in disposing of bombs in the designated demilitarized zones.
Another meeting of the joint working group will be held in Cambodia to discuss further implementations as the follow up to the ICJ’s decision.
